Donna Aviles

(Daniela Francisca Avilés de la Puente)

As a person and as an artist, I feel an impeccable duty to use the only tools I have and extend an invitation to change perspectives based on the rigid norms of society. These are perspectives I've acquired through experiences that I’ve consciously exposed myself to from a young age, always in pursuit of understanding myself and the world around me.

I’ve always had this sense that, as a society, we’re both deeply connected and incredibly disconnected at the same time. There’s this strange paradox where moments of beauty, the kind that bring tears of joy to your eyes, coexist alongside unfavourable events that hinder human development.

Maybe it’s a balance I haven’t fully understood yet.

My Journey

What I do know is that stepping out of my comfort zone repeatedly—from living in the chilean mountains in a native ecological village without electricity. Exploring my sexuality with different genders, to chanting mantras in temples and making service, taking medicine plants in the jungle, and then finding myself immersed in Europe’s bubble of capitalism and consumerism—has granted me a broader vision of what it means to be human. I feel compelled to share what I’ve found to be unpredictable to the eye, and that’s where my motto comes in: "magic is real."

For me, "magic is real" means remembering and using the extra sensitivity to appreciate the essence of being and understanding what advances in technology are taking from us, particularly in how we perceive nature. As a multidisciplinary artist, I strive to express this through various mediums—body paint, conceptual exhibitions, directing video performances, surrealist and abstract oil paintings, illustrations, art installations, etc. My ongoing search for self-understanding and what I’ve been trying to comprehend has led me to develop a strong capacity for self-reflection and an understanding of the conscious and unconscious. I believe that this connection between the two is key to fostering a better society, and it’s this belief that I aim to reflect through my art.
